September 23, 2011 - Nuclear Blast Records

The years following the release of their 2008 album ‘Silhouettes’ were a turbulent affair for Textures, with long-standing vocalist Eric Kalsbeek and keyboardist Richard Rietdijk leaving the band. The uncertainty surrounding their future has been totally obliterated, however, with their most commercially successful album to date, ‘Dualism’. I saw them live recently, and they totally blew me away with the new material they included: their new singer Daniël de Jongh especially gave one of the most powerful vocal performances I’ve witnessed. This album is a perfect example of how to write a metal record that balances riffs and groove with great songwriting and melodies that grip your soul. The majestic and simple harmonic language along with the strong presence of clean vocals (and what clean vocals!) have gained them a larger audience, yet the grooves on this album are still as intricate and catchy as ever: listen to the intro to “Singularity” and you’ll know exactly what I mean. Stef Broks again shows his genius on the drums, and Jochem Jacobs demonstrates why he is one of the best self-producers in metal today - the instruments are so well balanced and every single piece of instrumentality is conveyed. Overall, Textures have again proved that they are some of the most open, versatile and intelligent musicians in the current metal world: I expected nothing less and hope this run of form continues. - Zyglrob

Textures - Dualism: slightly toned down in terms of volume from their previous material, but absolutely first class songwriting and an enthralling pleasure to listen to.

Check back tomorrow to see which album made 4th place!

My money is on:

4. Uneven Structure
3. Animals As Leaders
2. Tesseract
1. Vildhjarta (because of their all mighty army)

It's a shame it's all about popularity and exposure. I Genuinely feel ForTiorl and Intervals deserved a place here.

Thats why we will also announce the top 10 of freely downloadable albums on that day, to keep things interesting Smile

So are the top two albums of the year really going to be announced on separate days? Seems kind of pointless, since everyone will know the number one once the others are in place.

I had to!...isn't this supposed to be a popularity contest? I could not imagine, voting for a band that you didn't like! Especially, on the internet!

The core of Textures has been together since the beginning, the music shows that! 'Dualism', is a legit contender! Not to many bands below this release, sound as cohesive! I didn't vote for this, but pre-ordered this disk the minute is was available!

...and if people voted for this release & didn't hear it first, then they are missing out! They pre-date, djent! Listen to 'Polars', then listen to 'Dualism'. These men are earning their status! They are a band about ten years recording now! A bit of respect to the elder Djentlemen in the room please!

I'm actually really disappointed from this album. don't get me wrong i think its really good album and probably the best one released this year (for me) but it lacks the punch of the older album, the older album had allot of power, it is probably my favorite album ever. I expected this one to make me feel the same. expectations ruined it for me, nevertheless its a very good album.

sorry for the grammar. English isn't my first language

I agree up to a point that this is mostly a popularity contest, but I think what's unique about this corner of the metal scene is that our 'popular' bands don't suck - they are actually all really skilled musicians that deserve every bit of attention they are getting, and worked hard to get it. So frankly, I don't think there's anything wrong with them leading the poll.

That said, if you're more into the 'underground' stuff, stay tuned for our top 10 of freely downloadable releases Smile

@mysteriousdsf

How can people cast votes for bands they don't know??

I have to admit that 4 out of the bands in the top 5 (cuz we all know what the rest 4 bands will be - TesseracT, Animals As Leaders, Uneven Structures and Vildhjarta - only the ordering is unsure) aren't that badass as a lot of guys underground (except for TesseracT, they're really badass). You just cast your votes on these because you mainly only know these.

For all the changes, Textures, has been through, since 'Polars', it's good to see where they stand today! Pre-djent genre band, that hopefully, have found their niche with consistency! They can now concentrate, on the music, which in future polls, will have them, as number 1!

sad, sad...
Not only d best "djentish" release of d year but probably d best metal release of 2011.
At least I know for a fact that the other bands higher in d top will be awesome as well... (not as much though)

When I got this and Uneven Structure, this just didn't shine anywhere even close to Februus. Really hoping that's in the top four guys.

Guess Sees ain't taking a spot in the top 20, kinda sad cause the album is fucking sick...

#1 Djent album of the year. I loved me some Vildhjarta but the songwriting on this album is just too damn good, it's progressive yet memorable, heavy yet delicate and soothing. The balance in their songwriting is truly a rare feat in music. Great summary review. Everyone needs to check this out. Oh, and "Reaching Home" is one of the best songs of the year regardless of genre.
