A map of djent
Last month, we added some new features to the site which allow registered users to indicate their favourite bands. User profiles now display these favourite bands, and band pages list fans as well. There is also a ranking of bands by popularity.
Over the course of the past month, many of you have made use of this feature: over 7500 'become a fan' links were clicked! This means that there is now a wealth of information in our site database about the bands' fanbases. We decided to do something cool with this.
Using this information, we can visualise how similar bands' fanbases are and create a map of the 'djent scene', where the proximity of two bands on the map indicates how much their respective fanbases overlap.
You can view the result by clicking the small version below. All bands with 10 fans or more were included (130 bands in total). The map clearly shows that the 'big four' of djent are currently Meshuggah, Periphery, TesseracT and Animals As Leaders.

where this monuments and Ascesis? aha
I don't think sales or downloads individually would be a good metric for popularity in this scene. Vildhjarta for example were already one of the most popular bands before there was even a mention of their debut. We're just using the information we have here. Also, keep in mind that this post is a year old and an updated version has been posted in the meantime
This is cool and all but I think statistics as far as downloads or sales would be better to determine some kind of 'big four', if there even really is going to be such a thing.
HAHAHA no way Axion, you best be a talented troll
Did you even read the fucking post, you dolt?
didnt know SYL are djent... anyway, periphery has more points than meshuggah, so the map in fact is terribly wrong
right above Cloudkicker
Where are Monuments?
this is excellent!
Haha cool.
Loving that my boys in Dr Slaggleberry are way out there on their own like lepers LOL - hilarious. Bless em.
That's incredibly cool man, awesome work.
Edit: Also, I love a ton of bands on this site, many that could be considered "favorites" and would add a lot more, but I'm anal and don't like my profile filled with 362 bands
hmm i thought there would be more Sybreed fans, regardless, this is a great idea. It would be cool if the map was updated as well because im sure some people didnt get a chance to add ALL their favorite bands yet.
hydrodjent ,amogh symphony, in exile\m/
I'm currently playing with the idea of setting up the script I used to make this on the server, and have it run every day. There's a few technological hurdles that have to be overcome before this is feasible, though
This is an awesome idea. You guys should do more stuff like this in the future.
so tight!
i cant wait to see more updates versions of this map
They are pretty close, actually
The distances on the map are not 100% accurate, because this is simply impossible to do in a 2D plane. That's why SikTh and Ion Dissonance overlap, and Bulb and Periphery are farther apart, even though the latter are probably more closely related in terms of common fans.
I find it kind of interesting that Bulb and Periphery are so far apart...
breakdown: that's a limitation of the fact that the map is 2-dimensional
Oh my, SikTh intersected with Ion Dissonance?!
Ridin' nerdy :DDD
Good jawb, Sanderboi!
Good job benanne
Shocked at how few Cloudkicker fans there are
They have many fans that have them as their only favourite band, hence they have comparatively very few connections to other bands. This is probably because some people signed up specifically to favourite them
This is VERY cool. Some cool work using the information
Haha this is pretty sick. Cool feature (: But what is up with Dr. Slaggleberry? haha lol
Haha this is awesome! Though we could all predict the top 5 or so, it's interesting to see where other bands came and which bands have similar fanbases.
