Uneven Structure: music video for 'Awaken'

75

Uneven Structure have released a music video for the song 'Awaken', off their forthcoming debut album 'Februus', which is due to be released on October 31st via Basick Records. The video is available for streaming exclusively on Metal Hammer.

It was filmed in Switzerland by Patrick Häberli (ProgHippie.com) and Christophe Mosconi (Qatlaq). The concept, artwork and post production was completed by guitarist Igor Omodei. About the video, he says: "The track 'Awaken' takes place at the very beginning of the album; it's the start of a journey. The music video is meant to metaphorically re-transcribe this and to help the viewer get acquainted with the physical representation of the Februus universe, visual codes and characters."

Uneven Structure will play this year's edition of Euroblast festival, which takes place in Cologne, Germany on October 21st-22nd. Their debut album is currently available for preorder from Play.com and the Basick Records store. It will also be availble at the festival.

UPDATE: the video is now also available on YouTube, watch it below.

Thanks to everyone at Got Djent for their support of the band and of our label. The truth is in the music and that is ultimately what shines through.

Cheers guys. Lisa x

I agree, he looks a bit weird sometimes!!! Smile

I for one, think that the drummer's facial expression[s] make him look like a freaking bau5. Also, he is a master of groove.

AGREED!

This track is pretty dope, also dig the music video...ominous on both levels.

I for one welcome our new red towel-faced overlords. They've got mysterious black pentagonal spaceships, and a keen sense of architecture. They enjoy long walks in the woods, standing in open fields whilst admiring their own engineering, and listening to djenty prog bands jam out in the wilderness.

Gonna be talking about this band for years to come and laughing about the forum posts for a couple of days.
Gotdjent finishing and fashion school, hahaha. This isn't hardcore, the music is the scene not the image Laughing out loud

The music is awesome, what more is there to worry about? Come on, people.

On a different note, what is the building with the red lights?

I can't believe this cool lil vid has caused such controversy. Also, who cares what they're wearing. Seriously, you're complaining about there clothes?! Really?

I disagree, man. Uneven Structure is all about a type of ambidjent. Clean vocals make sense (no vocals also make sense--but hell--It's hard to get all djent artists to offer an instrumental version...*clears throat*...hint hint)

@themidnightbeard:

Sorry, I love the bands music but the video was not thought out well - fact.

I've never heard of prog hippo or whatever so I don't really care that they're reading this.

Clean vocals, no good.

@themidnightbeard:

Are you implying, that we aren't allowed to have our own opinion any longer, now that we know that someone involved is reading up? Is this how you want the world to function?

In this special case, I know Patrick, the person behind ProgHippie, personally, and I would have absolutely no problem telling him my opinion in his face either. Friends will listen, and take from contructive critizism. On the other hand, I'm sure that if he felt I was being an asshole, he would have not hesitated to point that out as well Wink
I'll say it again, it wasn't meant to put anyone down, but merely some things I felt out of place in context. (And I'm sorry if I'm repeating myself, but cutting to the drummer doing something else than what you hear is nothing else but - yes - a flaw).

Also, we're not owing Uneven Structure positive feedback exclusively, just because they provide us with this video for free.

This forum/website/place should be here to encourage discussion, not ironing everybody down to exactly the same thoughts.

Best regards,
TGP

This album is going to SLAY.

I'm really glad that the comments here have brought someone from ProgHippie on to clarify things. Not because the commenters are right, but because ProgHippie deserves a little more respect for the work they've done - and maybe now that you all know someone is listening to your words - you will choose them more carefully.
Let's think about what we are criticizing for a moment. What people wear, and the uncontrollable expressions they make while playing fairly involved music. I would say that's being pretty judgemental and harsh. Next time YOU make a video, if you aren't the person I expected you to be... I'll be sure to go on mild rants about it all over the forums from which your genre was spurned. We ALL need to appreciate how far this band has come and what they now have to offer the world.
Thank you to Uneven Structure and EVERYONE involved in the video. I'm glad I got this glimpse into the world of Februus - and I'm STOKED to hear/read all the lyrical content now.

As somebody involved in the process of the creation of this music video, I must admit that I'm a bit surprised about the controversy the video seems to cause on here, and at the same time I'm very thankful for the feedback.

As for the material, setting, clothing etc:

Well, it was shot in HD as you can now see over at the Basick channel, and the material used was not cheap, and quite numerous, which mainly reflects in the number of different angles, approaches etc.

To the ones who critisise the lack of "professionalism" - I think this one is only a question of perspective. We wanted the video to be as everything Uneven Structure related - our own way. So if you define professionalism about the money spent to get a pro-shot with set designers, seperate producers etc, then it's definitely a no of course. But if you turn it around and look at what, where and who the video is geared and catered towards, what we want to transport also regarding the visual Februus concept and the amount of money and time available, I think it has completely fulfilled its cause. I think the video is very frank and honest and transports a lot of what Uneven Structure really are - so why have Chris change the white shirt he often wears, or Matthieu take of his shirt he mostly wears - it's not about that at all I think. It's about the music, and the video is a way to add the visual and contentual concept behind Februus. It's not about big names behind the shoot or clothing labels.

If you have any further questions towards the gear used etc, feel free to drop a line to .

Preppy looking bunch, well the vocalist anyway.

@kromatix

It was just the drummer's expression I was pointing out, not anything terribly relevant :]

Amazing song but dull video. In my opinion it inspires nothing. Not even a bit of strength. C'mon guys, you are doing metal for fuck sake... BE METAL.

@Beyond

I dont see anything at 22 seconds just some heads

Cool story bros, just enjoy the vid.

I'm not sure why Paul's raging so hard. Among all the inconsistencies I pointed out, criticizing Matthieu's choice of sweater pushed him over the edge of hatred. I'm not complaining about the video, just trying to provide a small amount of constructive criticism. All I meant to imply is that his clothing looks slightly out of place (to me) in the woodland setting of the video, just as the drum rug, and instruments with cables coming out of them do.

Pause it at 22 seconds. I wouldn't have pointed it out. But... I had to. Great song though.

My intention was never to complain about the coments you've posted or anything like that, but I just wanted to say that their video is a gift from them and the less thing we should do is to complain about it.

Enjoy the awesome music and concept of UNEVEN STRUCTURE.

Phew, calm down everyone!

paulyrhythm: thanks for the clarification, but let me add a couple things as well.

First of all, I was never intending to put down the band, the guys in the band, or their music, if some of you might have extracted that out of my rant.
In fact, I really dig the band, have met the guys more than once, and I think that Februus - from what I've heard so far - may really hit one of the top spots in this ever-growing genre.

Regarding the video, I think that the video is - technically - really well made and there are some awesome shots (Aure's dreads headbanging backlit by the sun for example).

But:
I find music videos in general absolutely unnecessary. This of course is my opinion and might also bias everything Tongue
Videos might be interesting if there is some really artsy stuff going on (Tool or NIN vids for example), but just watching a band perform in some random location, intermixed with some other random shots of geometric figures (and people with red turbans)? Not doing it for me.
Now if Igor says this all can be interpreted as start of the journey into Februus, the better, and maybe listening to the Album will also change my view on the video as well.

However, there *are* certain points from an art-directorial view, that might have been dealt with better (and it doesn't need highly professional staff either for that).

Matthieu wearing business clothing, that looks as if he had just been plucked out of a meeting and dragged into the woods is also something that irked me, as well as Christian wearing a white shirt among the other guys in black. This isn't supposed to "judge people from what they're wearing". But it's something that makes the visuals not look as coherent as they could have been. The term "Corporate Identity" comes into play here.

And then the thingie with the drums. It's not like this concept of "seeing and hearing what the drummer does should be somewhat related" is so very obscure.
At least don't do a closeup of the drums in the very moment when Christian plays something else from what you hear.

In the end I gotta say I still love all of you guys, and I hope you love me too Smile

Kthxbai

How does it matter if it is a professional vid or not. I think they made it so we can taste their art, and to understand a little bit better what their concept is all about. If you are going to be judging everything, from what the vocalist is wearing (which is absurd) or if they used a cheap hd camera, then you better use that energy to do something better for yourselves like your own video in stead of sit on the computer and write every detail that you found was no good.

For me the video is well done, it shows what we can expect from the album and I think they've done it with that purpose. UNEVEN STRUCTURES IS THE SHIT.

thall.

@TGP- First of all, you are one of the smartest dudes on this site so no, your opinion is definitely not invalid. And even if I didn't think that you one of the smartest, everyone is still open to what they think. In fact, I actually do agree with few of your points. And I was kind of playing devils advocate too.

"It's not like bands like this will get heavy MTV coverage soon, so why waste budget on a video at all."
Fuck, this video was not made for MTV man! Hope not. Its more for online promo I'd guess? I highly doubt much cash was spent on this dude! (Agree with kromatix on his post.) Cmon its mostly all DIY man with the help of some smaller names, just like Uneven Structure has always been. You know what DIY is right?

"this video is just useless." Useless? There is absolutely no need for this video? Absurd dude, I cant say I agree because I have seen so many metal videos, and many of which that looked much more terrible than this vid. Haha

If Uneven Structure was an elite black metal band that literally recorded over-reverberated music in forests like some black metal bands do, I'd need to see the fucking amps. Sure the vid takes away from the authenticity of playing but then again, this isn't a live vid. Its an abstract idea that could've been structured (hah) a little bit better but damn man, this is talent and it seems people are quick to bring others down without looking at the glass half full. I think some are over analyzing things thats all. It was nice of you guys to bring attention to some issues and I can see both sides but then again they always time to improve, isnt this their first vid?

@ Sevenstrings- "For some reason they dragged a drum rug into the wilderness to break the immersion of the woodland theme even more." Yea I guess I see this point and a few of your others but you said, "The vocalist is dressed in business casual clothing." Ok, judge someone on what they wear?????? How old are you, 15? A person who judges someone for what they wear? Really this is fucked up and shows your extreme immaturity, don't ever fucking judge people on what they wear. Just proves you're a shallow close minded person dude.

So if Igor says the point of the video is "to help the viewer get acquainted with the physical representation of the Februus universe, visual codes and characters" how did this vid not accomplish this?

"Performance videos in random locations with just some odd shots of other random people and geometric figures without telling any story whatsoever are just stupid." - TGP. Yes this is your opinion but the point of the video is above, just to get a rough idea of what februus' theme is going to be. It is what it is but I just stick up for good down to earth people who grind hard for what they want without having tons of cash in front of them.

This video will do more good than harm for them I think. sorry yea I was fucked up last night too, much love. If this doesnt make sense I could understand, havent slept in days...

@StringsOfSeven

I agree with what you are saying about the video.

But even the though the video "looks" nice doesn't mean that it was professionally done. You can get a nice HD Camera now for next to nothing. I seriously doubt they had an experienced director, a script supervisor (someone who checks for continuity in shots), a set designer etc...

For an amateur video I think it's pretty good. Looks like an art school student did it, I'd give them an A.

@GeN2Mo

Yeah, I can understand the older Textures reference. I also agree about the vocals.

That's the one thing I just can't get used to on the new Textures album, the way the vocals are just laid over the top of the music. Sounds like they recorded the vocals at a karaoke bar.

There is no meaning; just thall.

Musically, it reminds me much of older Textures. Extremely dense atmosphere and the layers interact brilliantly. Also, I like how the vocals are handled as a layer and don't stick out too much, while daring not to be catchy and at the same time not overly complicated.

The video captures the atmosphere of the music very well, but sense it makes not. But if it's meant as a starting point, this may well have its purpose.

Oh wow, the typical "they have achieved this, what about YOUR band?!" remark. Clever!

So I'm not allowed to have an opinion if I haven't filmed a video myself? Riiiight...

cool song. pretty sweet vid too. and theres a reason they call themselves post metal with no cabs! if i was them, id be impressed with the video. they have come from nothing to this, all you haters can talk shit but wheres your bands video? exactly. congrats on album completion doods

Thank you, StringsOfSeven!

That's basically my thoughts. Band performance videos in random locations with just some odd shots of other random people and geometric figures without telling any story whatsoever are just stupid.
It's not like bands like this will get heavy MTV coverage soon, so why waste budget on a video at all.

And shots where you see the drummer play something completely different from what you hear... c'mon guys.
This happens in music videos since decades, you would think that the editors have learned by now.

Great band, really looking forward to the album and EB performance, but this video is just useless.

Damn! This is amazing, killer vocals, too \m/

I would have enjoyed it more if the band wasn't in the video and it had just focused on the red-cloth-head guy and the alien pentagons. While I was watching it, I was hoping that the video was going to tell at least somewhat of a story. But at the end of the video, I was just as lost as to the purpose of 'red towel around face guy' and the 'black pentagons from space' as I was when I started watching.

Seeing them jam in the woods is just goofy to me. Why? They're all hooked into wireless systems but there's no amps, nor outlets to power them. The vocalist is dressed in business casual clothing, screaming and singing into a microphone that's plugged into nothing. For some reason they dragged a drum rug into the wilderness to break the immersion of the woodland theme even more. I liked the song but the video was weak in my opinion.

A few people make Tesseract references. Honestly, I dont get it.

I've always thought Tesseract has sounded thin and I have never been able to get into their vocals - never liked it.

I totally dig Uneven Structure though.

Jordy when you hear the whole album, it will all make sense Wink

Lisa

Awesome, cant wait for this album!

polymanjeah: as it says in the article, Play.com or the Basick Records online store. Just click the links.

Also, love the thall sticker on the guitar!!!!

-G-

SICK!

But.. there new songs don't really feel like complete songs; they feel like a lot of different parts scrapped together, not flawing seamlessly in each other.

That's all. I will fuckin' love the album.

Awesome! I was not sure about that snare sound...but it's definately growing on me.
The ambiance of this band is phenomenal and they have a stunning singer!

Bravo!

Just when I thought I couldn't get any more excited for the album... This is outstanding.

you know what would be really cool... if they made a freaking movie with whatever the story is lol. those pentagons were badass
