As much as I adore the sound of djent and progressive music, I love the sound of black metal and most of it's sub-genres. I just started this thread to see what some people on here think of the genre, certain bands, musicianship of the style, whatever.
Some of my favorite bands include Emperor, Arcturus, Ulver, Transcending Bizarre?, Mirrorthrone, and Nachtmystium.

I think frogonomicon is going to like this thread. My all time favorite black metal band is Emperor. I think this genre is kind of delicate for some people. I don't know if any of you have seen this documentary called Until the Light Takes Us?

Really digging Keep of Kalessin's new album at the moment Smile

If you don't mind some prog in your black metal you should check out Axamenta - Ever-Arch-I-Tech-Ture.
Ikuinen Kaamos's 'The Forlorn' is great as well, very doomy. Too bad they started sounding like Opeth after that Sad

I like (new) Immortal, Diabolical Masquerade and Negură Bunget too. Hell, I don't mind some Dimmu Borgir either, from time to time Tongue

You have some great taste, I found out about Axamenta too late, but loved that specific album from them. I am a fan of the other bands you have listed as well, except for Dimmu. you should check out Mirrorthrone, kind of like a Diabolical Masquerade and Dimmu combo.

Black metal is ok, I was more into the classic stuff. But I never understood the band's image, why most bands record their music in forests, and why the production of the bands is shit a lot of the time. I guess that makes it more elite. True black metal is kinda messed up haha. The church burnings are pretty badass if you're into that kind of shit! I really dont listen to it anymore, although I respect the music. American black metal isn't huge but I like these guys, dont know what to label them: http://www.myspace.com/wolvesinthethroneroom

There's nothing wrong with liking any particular style/sub-genre more than another or perticular tastes. I don't know if you're into more modern groups, but I'd suggest groups like Control Human Delete, Vulture Industries, or Averse which all have very different takes on the genre. Don't know what you're tastes are but these are just some cool unique groups.

I like all of Immortal, a select few Emperor, and even fewer other black metal acts. My favorite of all time has to be 1349 - Hellfire. Progressive, Heavy, Gritty, and Non-Satanic all in one package. With Hellhammer at the drums, they're hard to argue with (in my little world of a brain). It took me a second but i rattled my short term memory for a moment,

Akercocke (Antichrist)

Anaal Nathrakh (old)

and

Cryptopsy (Once Was Not is the only album of theirs i can wholly appreciate.)

All names mentioned with the posssssible exception of Immortal and Anaal Nathrakh, all are very jazzy/experimental with their works imho.

Not to mention Behemoth's 2005 Demigod. Which for myself had changed my perspective on both death and black metal almost entirely. Or music in general. That album is HUGE in almost every aspect

Anyone with more suggestions to the likes of these albums/bands?

I have not been deep into hunting for music for a few years now. Hopefully a few hidden gems have passed thru my filter of Decibel Magazine and the Grinding The Apparatus Forum.

Just to correct you, I think that Frost has drummed on every 1349 album, not Hellhammer (but he is a fantastic drummer)
I recently found a band called Bloodoline that put out an album in 2005 that might be up your alley, some aggressive/slightly technical black metal. Another band that is probably a bit more along the lines of Behemoth is Grave Miasma, who released an EP in the past year or two, more blackened death metal style.
Hope these interest you.

I remember Armada by KoK being very entertaining. Besides the Dragonforce-wailing-wankery. If you like them i'm sure you've heard of Wintersun (:

Although Xerath, i could not bear (:

I will check out the suggestions Benanne, 'ppreciate it mucho

Correct! I was mistaking Frost's badass-ness with that album Hellhammer released a few years back. Frost of Satyricon! How idiotic of me. It was THE Hellhammer that released a solo album of sorts, was it? I'm near positive i remember reading the ad saying it was Him..

And, yes! These sound delightful. I will check them out forsure. Cheers~
