I hear a lot about boosting mids, maybe it's because I don't down tune super low, but I run my gain high... well first off on my practice amp (line 6 spider III which is alright) i run on the insane channel with my gain looking like this \ and my bass is less. mids are right in the middle and treb at almost full.
--On my live set up, I run (a Bogner) dirty channel with gain at the middle or almost full, treb on full, mid right in the middle, and bass \ like that, punch on, bright on, mid shift on or off

I've tried boosting my mids but, it personally sounds muddy so, I mix treb, it depends on your tuning, pick ups and strings. and a very important factor, your pick attack.
I also happen to just not care to much about my pick ups being nice right now : p

And as far as amps go, you want higher quality and gain..ier? amps:
Peavey 6505,6505+, 5150, JSX
Axe - Fx
Egnater (have sweet tone from what I hear, but I have never personally tried it)
the Randall that Marc Okubo sounds sweet live, the V2?
I personally like the the Alchemist, (I love mine)
Mesa Boogie's are sweet too
Engl
-- hope I helped (most all the amps I've mentioned are pricey!)

Blackstar has some nice amps the Series One. The guitarist from Monuments uses one? I think? not 100% on that though

Less gain than Death Metal, but more gain than most music, BOOST YOUR MIDS, and your treble. some bass or it will sound one dimensional, and a good amount of presence and a overdrive like a TS-808 OR ts-9 IS NESSESCARY!

The reason you use less gain, is because the bite and attack of your midrange somewhat emulates a higher gain sound, and slightly less gain DOES provide more clarity and dynamic response.

For amps, ENGL or AXE-FX are the top of the line. EVH 5150 III heads are amazing aswell.

my friend was telling me it is also good to have a sound compressor(sound gate noise gate etc)to tighten things up and a tube screamer for sustain,
does everyone agree with this?

The tube screamer isn't for sustain, it's for clarity, brightness, TONE, and that sparkley drive you'll need to get a djent sound. But yet, get a good noise gate, like an ISP decimator and some kind of Ibanez tube screamer.
