Hey guys, I'm new to digital recording..I've been experimenting over the past few weeks, but can't seem to get a "crisp" mix. I'm guessing that's due to the EQ and whatnot, but I'm not entirely sure what I'm not doing. Any tips would be amazing!

Thanks.

Hi there !

First of all do you use compressors ?
What kind of drums vst do you use ?
Is there a bass guitar ? I can't hear it

About EQs, here is a frequency charts that can surely help you a lot : http://www.independentrecording.net/irn/resources/freqchart/main_display.htm

EQ is definitely important in making sure that all instruments are in their place and sounding as good as possible. I've been messing around with EQ a lot, and I'm fairly convinced that EQ is the biggest part of tone. Here's a site that could help you with some EQ.

Other than that, try to listen hard to each instrument and mess around. You'll get better as you go along.

haha,
that would probably be helpful!

A: Yes, I use the 4 band compressor that comes with Cubase 5, and use the presets off of that.
B: And I use Addictive Drums, I also parallel compressed them.
C: And no, I don't own a bass guitar.

I might catch some flack for this but if your entire mix sounds "muffled" throw an EQ over the master fader and boost 5k a bit.

Only do this as a last resort though.

Hey there,

Nice songs.I hear a lot of lo-verb in the acoustic guitar which is not required ,eliminate the lo-freqs in the reverb and go easy on that reverb man, that'll majorly help you plus, give a narrow Q boost at 5 khz as well as a hi-pass filter around 80hz. Plus ,pan your instruments as they make things really spread across so that your track doesn't sound all sticky and clustered. And also use a Stereo widener on the master channel so it spreads wide, but be careful to not to overdo it,it can destroy the natural timber of the mix.

I hope this helps
