This thread concerns the setup of a database for tabs.

I'm a guitar player myself and sometimes I'm trying to find tabs of songs I like.
Since most bands featured on got-djent aren't really famous and all, it's fairly hard to find tabs on the internet. I already got some tabs just by sending some bandmembers a PM and they we're kind enough to send it to me. But this isn't easy for the bands nor the guitarists.

I got thinking and it seems like a great idea to me to have some kind of database where everyone that has aquired tabs of bands featured on this site, can post these tabs.

After some "thinking" we came up to group tabs in this thread.

If someone has tabs that are not yet included in the list, feel free to post them in this thread. I'll try to make sure the tabs will then be added to the list.

That does sound like a good idea! And there are bands constantly announcing tabs in the News section on here, I think it would be a really nice idea to implement a Tabs section on this website where people can upload Guitar Pro files, although I'm sure there would be lots of issues involving hosting files and things that I wouldn't understand.

Yeah, a tabs section would be extremely high maintenance in terms of quality assurance, so we decided against it. It doesn't really fit into our scope anyway. Nevertheless if someone wants to set it up, we'll be happy to help in any way we can.

That's definitely understandable. I'd be happy to support the idea and help out, if there's a suitable place to upload them all or give links. Also, OP, would you only want tabs straight from the band, or also stuff people have worked out?

Well, if some people can upload one or more tabs via rapidshare, mediafire, megaupload... it could be nice to list it in the first post and to let someone (Death_Metal_Belgium ? =D) edit the post, receive the links via MP, indicate dead links..

The problem with including tabs in a thread like this is that you still don't have a clear view on which tabs are already there to download.
I figure it should be possible to make some kind of a list where you can click the according link. So much like a spreadsheet, where one column is the band name, and another one saying the name of the song with an attached link to download.

As far as I'm concerned the tabs straight from the bands are more reliable to the correctness of the tab. But if someone figured out a song that isn't posted yet, I see no problem in uploading them as well.

I'm currently using dropbox to share files with some of my friends/schoolmates, but I don't know if this is a good idea to set up a database like this? Are there any free providers that are accessible to multiple people? So we can arrange it in one place and everyone can download from there?

Another possibility seems to be the following. I found another file hosting site. It's called sugarsync, I didn't have the time yet to have a close look at it. But it seems that it is more or less the same as dropbox. If it were possible to share entire folders just by one link, that would be great. It then would be possible to make subfolders of the band names and one could simply download the files like that.

I might have a look at this, this evening or next week. In the meanwhile, does anyone have experience with this sugarsync site?

Megaupload isn't going to be an option any more Wink but Sugarsync looks like it could work unless America shuts it down, it offers 5GB for free. For bands that have tabbed stuff up, it'd be best to ask their permission before reuploading the tabs.

I had a closer look to Sugarsync. Like Spiralling Paradox said it is possible to upload up to 5Gb for free. The big question then is, how will the got-djent users be able to download them.
I found out that it's either possible to make for every seperate tab a public link, that can be attached to the bandpage. Or that it is possible to share the entire folder containing the tabs. But this requires every user that wants to have tabs to get an account.

It seems a good idea to me, although this is not official got-djent stuff, to have an Sugarsync account created by someone of the moderators and an email adress where people having tabs can send them to.

Only problem left is then who is going to handle this stuff. Personally I don't have a lot of time due to my studies and my master thesis.

Would it be possible for us all to trust each other with the same account details for all of us? Then we can easily upload and download. I think the bands would be much happier with a list of links directly to where they put the tabs though.

It might be a good idea, that someone of got-djent.com creates an emailaccount and a SugarSync account.

From there it is possible to either have e.g. 5 people with admin access to these accounts and for the other read-only.
Or it is possible as Spiralling Paradox said to even share the account details with everyone.

In my opinion the "safest" way to operate is the first. But it all depends on how many people are interested.
The second way is also possible. If at some point in time, to much misuse occurs it will still be possible to delete the sharing rights and do it like the first possibility says.

Like you said, it is possible to link directly to where the bands provide their tabs. But how to properly do this, I don't know.
