Lacrimm: Dishing out another free release full of great tunes
So I downloaded the latest Lacrimm release, 'Animalic', and I must say I didn't know what to expect. Sure, got-djent has a djent-iful array of licks and tricks honed together into awesome tunes, but you never know what kind you're going to get. Will it be a clone of some other band, an attempt to fit into the djent mould that really doesn't seem to exist in a specific category, or will it offer up something truly unique? I have to say, I like what this band did with the EP.
Sure, right off the bat you hear the obvious: the guitars aren't loud and in your face, the drums are a machine, and bass seems non-existent. I say to you nay-sayers: can you do better? And if so, where is your album?! This isn't some 15 year old guitar wannabe jamming poorly in a down-tuned/out of tune fender with a 15 watt that his step-dad fetched at a garage sale to occupy his kid while he watched the game, NO! This is artistry in another form, the work of one man (Chris Beason) in a studio with whatever he's got. It doesn't matter how he did it or what he did it with, the fact is: HE DID IT! And apparently you didn't.
Anyway, back to the music. When he says he's experimental/jazz/metal/fusion, he means it. This 5 track EP has a lot of diversity, from the heavy hitting riffs starting off 'Destroy the Shell' to the lyrically moving lines seen in the opening track 'Come Eradicate'. He could've stopped at one riff, but no, Lacrimm showcases the range of his instrument, often having lines moving in harmony with each other and against one another. Each track has a distinct sound to it that allows the listener to have a great all around experience with various sounds and styles of metal. Jazz interludes offer a break from the chaotic riffs, and downtuned destruction gives way to unexpected moments in phrasing and playing ability.
Bottom line, if you're looking for something off the beaten path your normal metal list, check this guy out. He's got a lot of stuff that can expand your ideas for writing your own music, and even if you aren't a musician I can guarantee that after the first listen, you'll find yourself going back to listen again.
