Pushing genres to limits boldly
When I saw Born of Osiris on here, I thought that fans were joking from past works until I heard the Discovery. It's simply an amazing album. Where to start?
The vocals attempt to balance with the deeper traditional deathcore vocals, while the keyboardist now joins. For a lot of genres, I've thought that you can enjoy it when the music is done right, whatever genre it is - for the first time, deathcore works here. For me it was a bit hard, like when Scar Symmetry switched to two vocalists after losing Christian. I have to say though, in the end it seems to work out much better for both bands. Surprisingly, the lyrical content deals with metaphysics and individualism which is entirely different from past albums.
Instrumentally this is overly djent unlike past works. The bass has much presence with palm muting to the max complimenting with the percussion quite awesomely (Like "Ascension"). There's a huge variety in time signatures and the guitars are very selective in solo material. There's also much more use of electronics (adding to the djent characteristics) and more attempts to balance heavier sounds with ambience (See "A Solution" and "The Omniscient").
I think the tracks that stand out the most are "Follow the Signs" (Of course who could forget that insane single?) which sets the tone for the rest of the album. "Recreate" has some crazy guitar work and some of the most unusual solos you'll hear in prog in general. "Two Worlds of Design" is solid too. The whole thing is solid but those are just my favorite tracks.
Overall fans cannot go wrong with this album. Born of Osiris heads boldly into a new direction in a beautiful way. Even as a fan of clean vocals mostly, I think Born of Osiris has combined deathcore, progressive metal, and djent into an amazing work like any famous painting or work of art. Expect brutal heaviness and insane polyrhythmic beats with philosophy. Any fan of prog death or djent will greatly enjoy this album! \m/

Literally! They did an amazing job!
You have summed it up very well. I had great difficulty getting into Born of Osiris before this album. This album just hits you like a freight train.
